(Slow Shutter Speed, Long Exposures)

De groepstentoonstelling (Slow Shutter Speed, Long Exposures) is opgebouwd rond de eerste artistieke ontmoetingen tussen Sarah Smolders en de kunstenaars Rabten Tenzin, Anna van Bommel, Rik Van Gorp en Jiyoung Chu. Naast het werk uit die eerste kennismaking werden zij uitgenodigd om nieuwe creaties te ontwikkelen voor de ruimtes van Out of Sight.
Deze keuze om nieuw werk te faciliteren lag voor de hand voor Smolders. Het zal voor sommigen geen verrassing zijn dat de praktijken van de uitgenodigde kunstenaars vaak snijlijnen opzoeken of grensgebieden aanraken—zoals tijd, schaal, ruimte, repetitie en arbeid of het lichaam op de proef stellen.
Ons eerste contact verliep als volgt;

Tot slot herinner ik me een rij monochrome schilderijen die, leunend op schijnbaar nonchalant gekozen houten blokjes van verschillende soorten en maten, poogden te verdwijnen in de voeg tussen vloer en muur. Een spanning – in een marge – die ik later opnieuw opmerkte in de plooien van een precies opgevouwen katoenen hemd dat zich haast leek te vermenigvuldigen in een stapel.
(Slow Shutter Speed, Long Exposures) is een uitnodiging om de tijd te nemen om de werken voor het eerst of opnieuw te ontmoeten – zodat ze later kunnen resoneren en herinnerd worden in andere ruimtes.

The group exhibition (Slow Shutter Speed, Long Exposures) is built around the first artistic encounters between Sarah Smolders and the artists Rabten Tenzin, Anna van Bommel, Rik Van Gorp, and Jiyoung Chu. In addition to the work from those initial encounters, they were invited to develop new creations for the spaces at Out of Sight.
The choice to facilitate new work was a natural one for Smolders. It will come as no surprise to some that the practices of the invited artists often seek out points of tension or touch upon liminal zones—such as time, scale, space, repetition, labour, or question limits of the body.

Finally, I remember a row of monochrome paintings that, leaning on seemingly casually chosen wooden blocks of different types and sizes, attempted to disappear into the seam between floor and wall. A tension—in a margin—that I later noticed again in the folds of a precisely folded cotton shirt that seemed to almost multiply into a stack.
(Slow Shutter Speed, Long Exposures) is an invitation to take the time to encounter the works for the first time—or once again—so that they may later resonate and be remembered in other spaces.
