TWO BE WITH 2

Solo exhibition at m.e.s.s.s.y. Rue des Fiennes 85, 1070 Anderlecht

NE

Tentoonstellen is stilzetten. Dit maakt Two be with 2 tot zowel doel als middel.

The exhibition Two be with 2 features recent work by artist Rik Van Gorp (2000, lives and works in Turnhout) presented at m.e.s.s.s.y. in Brussels.

The exhibition seems to consist of two series. On the one hand, a series of “chamber- paintings” and, on the other, a series of works on military tactics. The first appears personal, while the second appears anonymous. The painting Acallerated Stall is the only work with Van Gorp’s initials. These characters embody a double publicness: that of the aircraft’s model and that of the artist. Airplanes have a clear identity behind which an anonymity can hide. The same relation towards identity can be found between the intimacy of the maker and the public nature of a work.

Something that doesn’t move, suggests a chronology in two directions. The lampshades that Van Gorp shows serve as a static image between two states. When moving into his grandmother’s house, these remain during the renovation as silent witnesses of this transition. Personal experiences such as these derive their value from the specificity and uniqueness of the experience, but at the same time they are recognizable and universal. The same applies to clothing. Here, the social codes they convey can be read in two directions. The numbers in these (social) formulas have no nominal value but a social one: undividable by two with the plus-symbol as visor.

Both in topic and execution, the works shown form for the artist the intermediate link between the private studio and the public exhibition space. To exhibit is to pause. This makes Two be with 2 both goal and method.

The one with the lampshade that I should’ve taken down.

The relation with empty living spaces.
For some reason, lightshades are the ones left behind.

I remember it clearly:
the floor completely dug out, the walls already broken by the hands of the angle grinder.
In the middle of it all, the chandelier hanging just low enough to make it impossible to walk underneath it, yet just high enough to slide a table beneath.
Isn’t it funny that these were the things that stayed longest?

The Hole I said I would cover up, but didn’t. I’ll do it before I give you the keys.

Back home, I suddenly found myself choosing the colour for our new curtains with my mother.
Turns out I actually enjoy it.

I’m sorry we didn’t get to do that part.
The one with the numbers that add up to 1.

There is this theory that one and one add up to 1.
I surely hope it doesn’t.

A sailplane, or is it a glider, either way it’s passing by, I wonder if it’s just as quiet up close, I can’t see it anymore, thankfully only my sight wants to keep looking, according to my hearing it was never here.

Don’t worry, I’d promised I’d leave.

I went back to Brussels for the day.

I didn’t plan for it to be a blitzkrieg: entering fast and leaving nothing.
They told me to buy two. ( Two armchair, partly being covered by the tail of a small aeroplane)
Accelerated Stall ( The tail of a small aeroplane covering one armchair)

Here you see two paintings becoming 1,
one made in January, the other in September.

The chairs that were only sold in pairs.

The other marked with “BD”, the initials of the person who intended to buy them.
